Social media definitely isn't doing what it was originally intended to do.
I think there's 2 main forms of social media: to communicate globally, and to communicate with friends. For the latter, simple texts are perfect, while I agree Substack is great for the former!
Yes - agreed. Rented land with a lease of undefined term(s). Substack is great but is is not friendly in having APIs for getting that email list into your own Kit control. Or interfacing with things like Hopper for auto-posting
Yes, you’re right. We don’t know what Substack’s future plans are. Will they allow third-party tools to integrate, or will they build everything in-house? I assume that even if they do provide an API, they’ll likely develop their own tools behind the scenes especially since Substack is essentially building a newsletter platform with the features of a social media network.
Social media isn’t broken; it’s evolving. Your perspective highlights how these platforms continue to adapt, shaping our digital interactions in unexpected ways. It’s a testament to their resilience and our adaptability.
Thanks Jai. For someone who has never easily engaged with social media this was really useful. The 'rented land' concept is eye opening. I've never thought about it like that. Appreciate the useful tips.
That's very true. Email list is the most important asset.
Yeah
Anything that you own is an asset.
Exactly.

Yes and we as a user should be aware of it.

Yes. I would say building on social media is not a bad choice, but solely relying on it would be.

Thanks Lauren. If I want to say something more, I would say
"Be a social media creator, not a consumer".
